Mark Makombe was educated at St Ignatius College for boys; an elite Jesuit school about 30 km east of Harare where he completed his high school. After graduating from high school, he enrolled at the University of Zimbabwe to study for a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. He later obtained a Master of Science Degree in Computer Science from the same university and a Diploma in e-Commerce & Web Design from the British Computer Institute. He continued with his computer studies and obtained professional certificates in Linux Installation & Administration, Software Engineering, Project Management, Database Administration, Statistics and Computerised Accounts. 

He began his career as an Analyst/Programmer and rose the way up in Government and Quasi-Government Organisations in Zimbabwe. In 2002, he was appointed by the Government of Zimbabwe to a team mandated to establish the fourth State university in the country (Chinhoyi University of Technology: www.cut.ac.zw) in his role as ICT Director.  In 2009, he was appointed by the Government of Botswana on a similar mission to establish the Second State University in that country (Botswana International University of Science & Technology: www.biust.ac.bw) in a capacity as Chief Technology Officer. After a successful completion of that mission, he returned home to Zimbabwe and briefly joined Chinhoyi University of Technology. In November 2017, he was appointed as ICT Director of Bindura University of Science and Technology: (www.buse.ac.zw).

Mark is a Member of Zimbabwe Institute of Managers; Deputy President of the Botswana Chapter of ISACA (2012-2014); Member of the Botswana NREN Committee (2010-2012); Member of the Botswana Committee on Research Information Systems (2014-2015) and Member of the Botswana e-Education sub-Committee of the e-Government forum (2013-2015). Mark was ICT Co-ordinator of the UNESCO funded biodiesel project at CUT (2008); ICT Project Consultant for Reproductive Health Systems Implementation (USAID/DFID funded, 1999).  He is married to Kudzai.
